Stacked Rainbow Tutorial

Many times, my tutorials come about because I want to experiment with the fabrics. Last month, I bought this beautiful stack sampler of batiks from Connecting Threads. I wanted to get an idea of how I wanted to use the colors before the fat quarter sampler bundle came. A stack is 10-inch squares of 24 different batiks.

I can never decide if I like batiks better with black or with white! Do you have a preference?

Depending on how you turn the pillow….you get a different look!

Quick tutorial

I’m just going to put a quick tutorial up for now on the way I made it with the fabrics on hand.

Choose 6 different colors and 3 shades of each (I used 18 – 10-inch squares)

  • Cut as follows for each color group:
  • 1.5 x 2.5 of the lightest batik – 3 each
  • 2 x 2.5 of the medium batik – 3 each
  • 2.5 x 2.5 of the darkest batik – 3 each
  • 1-inch strip by WOF of the black  (3)
  • 2-inch strip by WOF of the green batik (2)

I was able to make all the blocks out of the stack and then added a black print for the sashing and a border of a batik I already had.

Here you can see the pieces that I have cut for my pillow.

After you sew the groups together add a 1 x 2.5 inch strip of black stashing between the blocks.

Adding black sashing between blocks

I added a 1-inch strip of black around the blocks and then added a 2-inch border of green batik. I then quilted the top.

Here is a diagram that I made in EQ7 after I had made the pillow so you can see how I arrange the blocks.

This is an 18 x 18-inch pillow and for the back, I just used the black print and did a lapped opening.

Here is the quilt that I made with the fat quarter bundle. I never finished the tutorial but it has been added to my bucket list.

I do have a tutorial for the Rainbow Rail Fence quilt that I think you will like. It isn’t exactly the same but very similar.
