Quilted Log Cabin Placemats for Christmas

Log cabin quilt blocks are fun to make and they can look so different depending on the width and length of the logs. This design is actually called Courthouse Steps and it is a perfect design for placemats.
Quilted Log Cabin Place Mats for Christmas
This post was originally written in December of 2012! Wow, it is hard to believe that was seven years ago!
It was time to update the photos (so glad I keep the originals) and info. I never did find photos showing the steps to make the placemats, I guess this must have been before I was really writing very many tutorials but you can find photos of the steps in the link below.
Don’t worry, I remade the log cabin placemats a couple of months ago and wrote a tutorial for them.
Log Cabin Place Mats
I used up the last of the Christmas fabric strip set to make these. I did have to add some red fabrics and a couple of greens. That makes quite a few projects – tree skirt, mug rug, table runner, wall hanging, and now placemats.
I don’t make my placemats as big as patterns usually call for…..I like a little smaller ones. These are about 15 x 17 inches, when I made the new log cabin placemats I made them just a little smaller.
I made two of the placemats using gold and green which I really like.
Quilting was just a simple meander with lots of loops using my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine. Isn’t this little kitty cute?
Can you imagine a whole quilt made of courthouse steps blocks? Maybe something like this. I love using Photoshop!
There is no yardage for the Christmas placemats as I used scraps in my stash but you could easily get several using fat quarters of fabrics.
Cutting:
- A – Red – 1 – 1½” x 5½” piece
- B – Green – 2 – 1½” x 5½” pieces
- C – Gold – 2 – 1½” x 3½” pieces
- D – Green – 2 – 1½” x 7½” pieces
- E – Gold – 2 -1½” x 5½” pieces
- F – Green – 2 – 1½” x 9½” pieces
- G – Gold – 2 – 1½” x 7½” pieces
- H – Green – 2 – 1½” x 11½” pieces
- I – Gold – 2 – 1½” x 9½” pieces
- J – Green – 2 – 1½” x 13½” pieces
- K – Gold – 2 – 1½” x 11½” pieces
- L – Green – 2 – 1½” x 15½” pieces
- M – Gold – 2 – 1½” x 13½” pieces
- N – Green – 2 – 1½” x 17½” pieces

Binding your quilt projects
When making this many quilted placemats, sewing the binding on by machine is a great option.

During our move this year I downsized a lot, I sure hope I kept this cute plate that I found at Goodwill. I bet it is in my Christmas boxes.

Both are pretty, but I think I have a slight preference for the red.

Connie, these are gorgeous! I was looking through my Christmas fabric last week and ran across a bunch of strips that I had saved from a project last year. Maybe I’ve found a use for them! And even though I don’t attempt FMQ, even I can do that on a placemat. 🙂
