Are you looking for a fast & easy quilt project for your kids or grandchildren? Make them their own personal placemat and coaster to use a dinner time!

I made my granddaughters each a little placemat and coaster for Christmas. They both really loved the cute fabrics that I used.

I bought this cute little charm pack called The Sweet Scoop by Dan Morris because the fabrics were so darn cute! Gummy Bears, licorice….all kinds of candy! There were only 38 5-inch squares in the pack and I cut all of them into 2½-inch squares.

The charm pack I bought is no longer available but you can find some cute Charm Packs designed for children here. I also had some cute cupcake fabric that I bought this summer which worked great with it.

Kids Placemat and Coaster Tutorial

8-inch x 12-inch

Fabrics

  • 1 charm pack of 5-inch squares
  • 1 fat quarter of fabric for the center rectangle and backing
  • 1/4 yard of fabric for 2¼-inch binding strips

Cutting Directions

  • Cut (16) 2½-inch squares and (1) 4½-inch x 8½-inch rectangle for each placemat.
  • Cut (9) 2½-inch squares for each placemat.

Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  • Sew (2) of the 2½-inch squares together – do this twice
  • Add (1) set of these to the left side of the 4½-inch x 8½-inch rectangle
  • Add the other set to the right side of the rectangle
Sew the center quilt blocks together
  • Sew two rows of (6) 2½-inch squares together
  • Add one row to the top
  • Add one row to the bottom

This will make a small placemat that is 8-inch x 12-inch. Perfect for a little one.

Sew the rows together for the placemat

Cut a piece of fabric for the backing and add some Warm & Natural batting. I did some simple free motion quilting on my vintage 15-91 sewing machine.

Add binding

I cut my binding strip 2 1/4 inches wide and sewed it to the backside of the placemat.

Adding the binding to the placemate

By doing this I will sew the binding down by machine on the front side. These will be reversible and by doing the binding this way I get a nicer finish on both sides. I usually sew the binding to the front…..it just depends on what I am making. The binding was then stitched on the sewing machine.

Binding added to placemats

I really liked this fabric that I had in my stash and it was perfect for the back. Doesn’t that pink batik look perfect with it!

Coasters

Make a 9-patch block from the 2½-inch squares for one side of the coaster. I cut out the cute little cupcakes for the back of the coasters and then just added a border to get them to the same size as the front.

Add batting and backing and quilt. Finish by adding the binding.

The little coasters are perfect for a child’s cup. I don’t know which side I like better.

Too cute!

I bought a couple of Cinderella plates and cups that look cute on the placemats and mug rugs. My granddaughters really enjoyed using these!

Super cute fabrics for fun placemats and coasters. Too bad I didn’t make a set for my Great Granddaughter who is turning four on the 23rd of Sept. She would have loved them. Yes I can make fun sets for Christmas for her instead. Happy Week Ahead Dear.

I’ve never seen such lovely fabrics here in Australia. The placemats and coasters are absolutely beautiful and the vibrant colours and designs make them so unique.
Mr Mickey looks suitably annoyed wtih his new look. It’s a good idea to take a photo with you to the groomer next time.

  3. I soooo love the placemats and coasters. However, I want one of those cakes. My mouth is watering, Ha Ha. Thank you for all you do. I enjoy checking in every day. Mr Mickey does look fine and happy. Best wishes.

  4. Love that pattern and the fabric! Now I want a cupcake! Mr. M looks very handsome, and like several hair cuts I’ve had – they grow out. Hope you’re not sending the storms this way! We’ve had some crazy weather here in Ill.
    Thanks!
