I have this huge container of neutral strings, oops….I found some yellow in there that will get moved to my yellow/orange container.
Anyway, these are definitely string pieces. Nothing is wider than 2 inches and most are much narrower.
I had 4 string blocks with flowers on them and I decided to make a wall hanging and just add more neutral strings to the corners. It looked pretty good on my design wall floor.
After making the 4 string pieces the bucket of neutral strings….doesn’t look like any were used. That is really okay because I need to make more of the string squares for a pattern I am working on.
I hung it up on my wall which is across from my sewing machine and while I was working on something else yesterday I would glance up and look at the neutral string wall-hanging.
The more I looked at it the more I thought it looked boring. Hmmmmm what to do.
Last night I used my favorite tool or I guess I should say my MOST used tool…..the seam ripper and removed the corners. I am going to add a flanged border in dark green and then put the corner strings back on. I think this will really make the center design pop.
I finally finished the wall hanging with the green flanged border. I think you will really like it!

I like the applique on the string pieced background blocks! I'm pretty sure that when one "opens" a container of "scraps" the oxygen stimulates breeding?!? Looking forward to seeing the rework of this piece!

That looks beautiful, but I was noticing the rulers on the wall. How do you have rulers attached to the wall? I can't see any nails, etc. Looks like it might be an idea I can use. Thanks, would love an answer.

OOOHHH I LOVE IT! I have a basket of neutral fat quarters I've been collecting….your work inspired me to take another look at them….love how they create such a nice background for the flowers!!

The flowers really stand out against the neutrals, Connie… love them. Sounds like you are super organised having scraps sorted in colours.

I liked it as is too but think you might be right about a dark fabric around the center making it pop. Sort of the middle being like a medallion center.. Anxious to see the next step.

Hi Connie, It's been a long time since I have dropped in here and made any comments. I have been reading blogs and trying to keep up with things, but life keeps getting in the way. I love your blocks with blooms. I quite liked it the way it was but on reflection I think what your going to do to it will make i tbetter. Keep up the good work.

Oh I am so glad I am not the only person that keeps every piece of fabric that I have ever cut out!! LOL! My tubs look just like yours!! Now you have given me an idea on what to make with my "string" fabrics! Thanks! 🙂

I've been working on string quilts myself (using selvages) for the past 6 months and it hasn't even made a dent in them! Sew much fun!!

Connie I laughed out loud when I saw your overflowing box of neutral strings. MAN! That's a lot o'stuff!! I'm always struggling to find neutrals so I have to say I'm a little envious. And I agree that a border between your flower centers and the string corners will really 'make' the design.

Honestly, I liked it before you unsewed the corners. But I can picture how different it will look when you put it all back together.
