Cabbage Rose quilt in the Snow

We still have snow which does make a nice background for a quilt, of course I think green grass would work great too! The deep freeze is still here in Iowa.

Cabbage Rose quilt in the Snow

This quilt is approximately 25 x 35 from some old decorator fabric I had. I have this thing about using old fabric first when I am trying something new.

I was using the new dies I received from AccuQuilt and I wanted to see how the pieces lined up before cutting into my “good” fabric.

I used muslin for the equilateral triangles. Many, many years ago I bought a big box of decorator fabric scraps from a company and they were all long narrow pieces. I needed fabric that was a little bit more than 9 inches wide for the hexagon shape and this worked perfectly.

After I pieced a couple rows…..I decided I really liked the way the fabric looks in this pattern so….I cut more pieces.

Here you can see how I stitched the pieces together in rows.

I quilted it and then trimmed off to make my quilt rectangular.

I have to show you the back and tell you a cute story…..Builder Bob isn’t a quilter and when I was showing this to him he got a peek of the back and said “Wow! I really like that side!” Oh boy.

Here is a closeup of the free motion quilting. I like the way you can see the star here. There is also a Half Hexagon die that would be fun to use for a design like this.

I used the Hexagon and the Equilateral Triangle dies to make my quilt. The Equilateral Triangle could be used on a Go Baby but the Hexagon will need the larger GO.

Here are the AccuQuilt dies that I used to make this quilt project.

The GO! Hexagon #55438 die has 4 1/2-inch sides and finishes at 4 1/4-inch.

You will also need the GO! Equilateral Triangle #55429 that has 4 1/2-inch sides and finishes at 4 1/4-inch.

These are some fabrics I bought about 2 years ago when they were on clearance at my LQS and I have always planned on making a quilt for our room with them. The floral prints is Poetic Blossoms by Lisa Audit licensed to Wilmington Prints and the burgundy dot is Over the Moon by David Carter Brown licensed to Wilmington Prints; the beige is Retta Warehine for Quilting Treasures by Cranston 2006. I like it when there is a date on the selvedge. I remember buying about 3 yards of each, leaving and then driving back and buying the rest of the bolts.

Fabrics for quilt

When you sew your pieces together there are little notches and dog eared corners to help you match your pieces.

Match the notches on the fabrics

Stitch your 1/4″ seam and it should match perfectly.

matching up the seams is easy

This will be an ongoing project.

That quilt is truly stunning in its beauty. So sorry to hear your ‘red’ couch arrived more burgundy. Down the road you may be pleased because it’s much easier to decorate around a burgundy piece than a red. Something to think about.

Thank you so much for the inspiration. I have had for a long time about 6-7 yards of a green cabbage rose print that I was hesitant to cut into. Now I know how great it can look!
About your couch–we quilters have a very discriminating eye for color and I would take one of your cushions into the store and compare it to theirs, under their light and see if yours matches or if maybe the dye lot has changed a bit and yours came out darker. (Speaking from experience!!!)

You are so fortunate to be able to play with the accuquilt dies! How fun!

  4. Great test piece and I can't wait to see the Red one finished.

Love the results you've gotten with your Accuquilt. The large print is jumping off the page at me!
I'm ready to photograph everything on green grass too. Go away snow!

Very pretty Connie — love that fabric and it's neat how the dies include the mark for alignment. Love that!

  7. So fun to see the accuquilt dies in action. Would you share what muslin you use? I would like to buy some to use but am lost as to what brand to get.

  8. I love cabbage roses! I guess my mother-in-law's love for them robbed off on me. I really like this project of yours!

    Stunning, Connie!

  10. Both of them are really pretty!! Almost makes me think I should get an AccuQuilt! 🙂

  11. That is really pretty, Connie. I'm sorry to say (VERY sorry) that I'll have snow for photographs tomorrow. I'm with you. Green grass would work just as well and, IMO, better.

  12. Beautiful! I just love florals. So that's home dec fabric which is actually heavier than regular quilting fabric? And it still works well with a muslin? I like that you backed it with that beautiful fabric too. It must be quite sturdy.

Gorgeous quilts! Makes me want to do another Hexie 🙂

  14. Connie,

I love BOTH of your quilts…the tiny one that is completed and the GORGEOUS red you are making for your room! LOVE them!

  15. Just love this green quilt, but the red one is making me swoon. Red is my colour.

  16. Podunk Pretties says:

What a great pattern for large prints. That second quilt your making is screaming my name….can you hear it?!…LOL

  17. Very pretty fabric in both pieces – but just LOVE the peonie print! Just striking with the pindot.

  18. I LOVE the large print in the hexies like that. You did a fabulous job on it and I can't wait to see the red one come together.
