Remarkable Rectangles

I received this book from Martingale Publishing to review and I have to say that there are some beautiful quilts in this book that look hard but aren’t. Robert has done an excellent job of breaking the steps down for each quilt.

Have you ever looked at woven coverlets and wondered how they would look converted to quilt patterns?  That is what Robert DeCarli did and designed thousands of quilts in Electric Quilt before writing Remarkable Rectangles – Deceptively Simple Strip-Pieced Quilts.

It was really fun to read the introduction and learn how he got started designing quilts.

Sunny South caught my eye right away, I think because these are some of my favorite colors so I decided to make it as a table runner.

I finished quilting my Sunny South table runner and really like the soft, delicate look of it! I barely had enough of the background fabric left to be able to do the binding.

Sunny South was the pattern I liked the best in the book and decided to make.  I just did a small stipple quilting on this runner and I think it looks pretty good.

Last Friday I showed you the little, teeny pieces I was working with and then decided to stop at 8 blocks.

When I did the book review last week on Remarkable Rectangles Sunny South was the pattern I liked the best in the book and decided to make. Here is a closeup of the runner and the quilting.

This quilt is called Monarch, if you changed the color you could have flowers.

Each quilt has color photos to show you how to piece and cut the blocks. It really reminds me of Seminole quilting which I did a long time ago.

Kathy’s Star is a neat quilt that I could see making just a small part of and having one star.

Robin’s Butterfly really does remind me of a butterfly, I can see making this with several colors.

Ezekiel’s Wheel was also shown in the book with just a section used and an applique done in the center.

Indian Beadwork really does remind me of Indian beads!

Wedding Ring is a neat pattern and I might have to make just one section.

Ludwig’s Corner is one of the most versatile of the weaving-inspired quilts.

Chinese Screen makes me think of a dragon design.

Charlotte’s Garden is beautiful.

There are 15 neat patterns in the book plus a section on variations and block modifications. I can’t wait to make a project from this book!
