 Featherweight comes home

Look what I found! A beautiful Singer Featherweight from 1952. I think it is so neat that you can still go online to Singer and find out when your sewing machine was made. The serial number is AL-185228. Here is the link for the Singer serial numbers.

We recently got back from a trip to Elk River, MN to see Bob’s mom and stopped in Prairie Du Chien on the way back and went to a flea market where I found this beauty! We were almost ready to leave when I spotted this.

The case is in great condition, there is a key and look at all the bobbins! The seller had a generator so I was able to plug the machine in and make sure it worked. There wasn’t any thread but I’m sure I can adjust the tension if needed.

I won’t use the oil but how fun to have a old can that sold for 30 cents. Are you wondering what I paid for it??????? Only $200! I haven’t used it yet……I might have to try it today. I have been wanting one for some time and I’m tickled to add this to my collection. Builder Bob says……”No more sewing machines!”

We stopped at several quilt shops along the way and I picked up some goodies I couldn’t live without. Notice there are 2 patterns for clothes…..I used to sew all my clothes but that was years ago and I have kept saying I wouldn’t do it anymore. Well, I saw these patterns made up in batiks and…….had to get them! Hmmmmm……wonder where my serger is and if it still works. I also picked up that cute AccuQuilt Owl die.

We really enjoyed our trip to Elk River, MN and getting to spend time with Bob’s mom. She is a sweetheart and you would never guess that she is 94 years old! Bob had fun cooking dinner for us a couple nights.

I was able to get plenty of walking in when we were in Elk River, MN. We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites and there was a overpass bridge for walkers and bikers. This was so neat as Bob’s moms place was on the other side of this busy road.

  1. I also have a Featherweight. Where do you find the serial number. My machine isn’t as pretty as your, but I am still glad I have her. Her name is Lela.

    1. Hi Nancy,
Serial numbers are stamped on the underside of the machine, and consist of two letters, followed by six digits.

Most serial numbers are found on the bottom of a Featherweight
next to the bottom tray, but a few of the early AD models are found
inside & underneath the bottom tray.

Congrats on your "new" Featherweight. I had been wanting one for quite some time. Now that I commute out of state for work, I decided to look again. I just scored one myself a couple of months ago from a couple who restore vintage Singers. I found them on Craigslist. My case and machine are in excellent condition.

It's interesting, now that I have my Featherweight, my Singer 15-91's (which I do all of my sewing on now) and my 301-A, my desire for any new machines has waned. I guess I was looking for my Featherweight all of this time.

It's a blessing for your husband to have his mom to visit with. Vacations that go well and the perfect ones.

I love my Featherweight. I take it with me on trips as it is much more portable. My hubby bought it for me one Christmas. Enjoy!

  5. Aw, that picture of your hubby and his mom is so sweet! And how nice to be able to stay in a hotel so easily accessible to her house!
Now on to that featherweight. Awesome. And would you believe I just found one at a flea market too? Just a couple weeks ago. Mine was born in 1933, one of the first batches made. It was marked $275 but the guy sold it to me for $260. I have the case but no key, which makes me nervous. I'm currently trying to get the musty smell out of the case. Have it stuffed with newspaper. Funny too, my husband's name is Bob and he said "where are you going to put it?!". I have a nice electronic Brother, I have my mom's (her mom's) treadle, and now this one. Oh, and a serger. So, no more machines!!!

  6. Congratulations on your new baby! She is a beauty. I love my featherweights (don't tell Bob, but I have three!)

    Pugs and kisses,
    Nancy

Your new Featherweight looks in incredible condition – congratulations on such a wonderful addition to your quilting family! I'd love to have one someday…saw they are actually still making them in Mexico, but getting huge prices for them!

  8. Tanya Quilts in CO says:

You Featherweight looks pristine! $200 is a great deal for one in such good shape. Congratulations!

  9. Susan Arnold says:

Congrats on the new baby! I got mine 2 months ago, and now understand why quilters love them. They are great little machines!

  10. LOVE your new Featherweight…and what a great deal! This is so funny…. I just got my first one this week too and haven't had a chance to post on my blog yet. Mine is a 1938 model and she's in great shape too. If you go to YouTube, there are tons of Featherweight videos on maintenance, cleaning, oiling, adjusting tension and just about everything else. I've been trying to watch them all before I do anything to my new girl. Enjoy your new treasure!

  11. Congrats on your find. You will love the little machine to piece on. Keep her clean and oiled and she will run on and on. Sounds like a good trip and love all your new stuff!

  12. Karens Quilts, Crows and Cardinals says:

Woohoo! You go Connie! Congratulations. I have my eye open for a bargain too – looks like you found it. Can't wait to see how she stitches.

  13. I have a Featherweight that I bought on eBay but I rarely use it. It does sew a very nice stitch.

  14. Pine Valley Quilts says:

What a great find ! Love to see what you make with this beauty.

  15. What a find! Sounds like you had a great trip, Connie. Thanks for sharing.

Oh Dear I am a very un-lady-like shade of green with envy for your Featherweight. I have wanted one forever since high school when my older sister would let me sew on her mother's Featherweight. I almost had one for $350 but my friend bought it and then just sold it without telling me. Drat! Yours is beautiful and I know you will love sewing with it. June JOY Dear!

  17. Carole @ From My Carolina Home says:

Wow, that was a steal!! You made money just bringing it home! Fun to sew, and they are such simple machines, making perfect stitches most of the time. Great buy!

  18. What a find!!! Looks like it is in great shape!!! Have fun playing with your new toy. Bob's Mom looks great too.. and in great shape! 🙂

  19. What a great looking machine. You really lucked out on that one. I'm glad you had such a good time and had such a wonderful visit with BB's mom. She looks very happy to have her son by her side.

  20. Vicki in MN says:

Wow what a steal you got that machine for!! I have a friend in Hastings MN that works on them and teaches classes for maintenance on them if you should ever need such a thing. She also has some parts for them. I have been wondering if I should look for one. But I heard they are not all the lightweight?

  21. I'm so happy to hear you both had such a great trip and Bob was able to spend some time with his Mom. She looks very happy to have her little boy home for a visit.

You just crack me up Connie! I seem to recall 'someone' saying not long ago that she was NOT going to get anymore machines. LOL Of course, I think anyone reading this would have said you were crazy if you would have passed that one up. That's an amazing looking machine and that case looks brand new from the picture. What a great deal!

  22. Kevin the Quilter says:

What a steal for the Featherweight! I hope you have no tension problems, that will make it even better! What wonderful goodies as well! And your mother in law looks like a very sweet person!

  23. Quilting Babcia says:

Lucky happy you! That featherweight is a beauty. Adjusting the tension is easy and they are about the best old Singer machine going, except maybe for the 301's and the 15-91's of course!

  24. Missy Shay says:

I really want a featherweight too. I like to make my clothes, but it just takes too much time and I am terrible at reading a pattern.

  25. Libby in TN says:

You got a bargain! Looks like the machine is in great shape. I have the 1939 Featherweight I learned to sew on, recently cleaned with the motor and foot pedal repaired. Glad you had a good time in MN.

  26. It sounds like a great trip and visit. To come home with such a great find is a real bonus. Enjoy the new baby.

  27. uhhh it's ON Connie, to do something with the OWL die- want to co-post on the 15th for my Accuquilt challenge monthly posts?

  28. Wonderful buy , I learned to sew on a featherweight !! Those patterns look really interesting ,can't wait to see them made up . Sounds like you had a great time and visit with your MIL .
