One of my first quilts….and only hand quilted one……was a log cabin quilt. This still remains my favorite quilt pattern.

I am taking part in the Fat Quarter Shop Quilt Along at the Jolly Jabber.

Fat Quarter Shop
has created another Classic & Vintage quilt pattern. This pattern shows a neat way to make log cabin blocks. The patterns uses the Creative Grids Log Cabin ruler which I didn’t have but I did have several different rulers that I was able to use. I used a 4 1/2 inch ruler to make the first trim of the block. I lined up the center of the ruler with the center block.

For the second trim I used a 6 1/2 inch ruler and also used painter’s tape to mark another diagonal line.

For the final trim of the block I used a 8 1/2 inch ruler and painters tape again.

Here is the final block and making it this way definitely made a perfectly square block.

I ended up making six blocks for a small quilt. Here you can see it all pieced and ready to be quilted. The pattern includes a couple of appliques that would love beautiful.

I decided to just add some little flowers and leaves.

I did my normal type of raw edge applique free motion stitching.

I used pinks that I had in my stash…..my pink stash is getting low. The quilt size is 22 x 32.

You can download the free pattern for the block here.

There is also a video that shows how to make the block and is very informative. The link is here. After watching it, I think this is another ruler I just might have to buy. Kimberly even shows a cute little Fat Quarter Shop ruler that I’ll be picking up! Yes…..I am a ruler junkie.

I hope you enjoy this post and make some log cabin blocks of your own. This is my last quilt for August and what a perfect finish. Don’t forget to stop by the Jolly Jabber and see what other quilters have made while taking part in the Classic & Vintage: Hope Blooms Log Cabin Quilt Along.

Love the colors! Just beautiful! Luckily I mostly make quilts that don't need exact size blocks but this method is something I'll tuck away just in case. Thanks!

Always so Pretty in Pink and to add the flower appliques really changes the look of Log Cabin. Having the right tools really does make any job so much better. Bye to my favorite August…

  10. The quilt is beyond sweet, Connie, and that log cabin ruler is amazing. I've never really like making those blocks because mine never look quite right but that ruler might be the answer for me. Your solution is good, too, but I'm lazy; if there is something that "does the math" for me, I'm all over it. :>)

  11. What an adorable quilt! Thanks for showing us how we can use rulers we already have from our stash of rulers. It seems every time I turn around a ruler is calling my name. I know we all have rulers that aren't as necessary as we thought at the time we bought them. I have several I've never used. I love the touch of the flowdies on the quilt.

  12. So cute and the applique is such a nice little surprise in the design. I've also done several log cabin quilts over the years but have never used a method like this. Very interesting.

  13. Such a pretty, dainty Log Cabin block quilt you have created! I love the applique you chose to embellish with. Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful creative day!

  14. I just love the little quilt! Your little flowers you added, just make it a perfect project. Thanks for sharing!

  15. It's so pretty, Connie! I love the pink and green flowers–really adds a nice touch.
