Bright Jewel strip pieced table runner on deck

This is another strip pieced table runner made with bright jewel colors and a tutorial to show you how to make it. The Jeweled tablerunner was originally posted in 2015.

Bright Jewel Strip Pieced Table Runner Tutorial

Table runners are always fast and easy to make and you will be surprised how easy it is to make this table runner.

Bright Jewel strip pieced table runner on deck with flowers

Size 12″ x 44″

I picked six fabrics from the fat quarter bundle and also used muslin for the neutral strips.

  • Cut each of the 6 fabrics into 4 – 1 1/2 inch strips by the longest side of the fat quarter (22 inches).
  • Cut the muslin into 10 – 1 inch strips the width of the fabric, then sub-cut to 20-22 inches for a total of 20 strips.
  • Sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Join pieces together.
Bright Jewel Table Runner Tutorial fabrics

It is a good idea to sew the first two strips together and then switch directions for the next strip. Change back and forth when adding each strip. This will keep your piece from bowing.

Bright Jewel Table Runner Tutorial fabrics sewed together

Make 4 sections. Press after adding each strip. Your section should measure 9″ tall.

Square up each section and cut  2 – 9″ x 9″ squares. You will have a total of 8.

Add backing and batting and quilt as desired. I cut some additional 2 1/2″ strips from the leftover fat quarters to use for my binding.

My daughter was here last weekend and claimed this table runner. She just redid her bedroom in these colors and this will work perfectly on her bedroom dresser. She would like 2 small mats for her end tables. I think I have just enough leftovers to make them.

Today's post might just be the incentive I need to finish up those bedroom runners!

No table runners in the bedroom, but still have a lot of my moms dresser scarves that she embroidered back in the 50s. Do have runners for the dining table. Great fabrics.

  181. Sorry, no table runners in my bedroom either. I use them as long wall hangings on my kitchen door.

  189. Nope, no table runners in the bedroom. If company is coming, I will sometimes put out the dresser scarves that my grand mother crocheted out of thread, they look like lace.

  190. I left a comment on the Fabriquilt blog, remarking on how the deep colors off-set by the white sashing really "pop"! Thanks for a great tutorial, Connie.

  191. I do use some table runners, but mostly tend to make them as gifts. I may need to change that trend, the way I decided to make more quilts for us to keep and use and we've been so happy about that.
