New Studio

I have been keeping a secret………I am getting a new huge quilt studio!! I have wanted one for quite some time but it just didn’t work out. Last year we talked about building on but our lot is too small. It is too expensive to build up and I really want my studio here at home. My present room is overflowing…..into our bedroom, laundry room, living room……almost every room but my dads.

I have only mentioned it to a few people as I didn’t want to jinx it…..I have wanted this for so long. It is getting close to being done so…..it is time to share.

My first quilting posts were in November of 2010…..where does time go???? I actually started my blog in 2007 when I was doing a lot of digital scrapbooking for about a year, then it sat empty and forgotten until I got the quilting bug again. Actually……it was having a room to set up my sewing machine again and get my fabrics out of storage. Anyway, I kept rearranging my studio…..(I have a whole page of changes here) trying to squeeze just a little more space out of my 11 x 10 room.

Well, last July Builder Bob decided to sell most of his woodworking stuff as he just doesn’t have a interest in it anymore and…….would build me a new quilt studio downstairs. Here is what his room looked like……no windows.

About 5 years ago we put in a wood stove in the basement which we used to heat the whole house. We no longer have a source of wood to cut and for the last 2 years we have bought it. It is no longer cheaper than LP and……we are getting older and hauling wood isn’t as much fun. Time to get rid of it.

Since we live along the Mississippi river our house is built up and the basement/garage is ground level and was always meant for storage. We needed to buy a new furnace to take care of the basement area.

Builder Bob has a LOT of stuff! It took a couple months to just get it sorted and packed up. I’ll keep the shelves but they will go on a different wall.

The first thing I asked for was a window. I have to be able to see outside.

Things are finally starting to get emptied out. It is now August.

Not much happened in August…..I think Fisherman Bob was out on the river.  In September our neighbor came over and started getting things ready for the window. I am starting to believe I will really get a new studio!!!

Now we are ready for the window……and wait until someone can come and cut the concrete.

The concrete is cut and Builder Bob is ordering the windows. I think I was gone babysitting when this happened. Which meant I missed out on the mess.

Here is the window on the inside. There will actually be 2 windows. We went on our trip to Minnesota and thought the windows would be here when we got back……they didn’t get ordered.

Tim to start on the walls. Insulation and then OSB on the walls. It works for me as almost every wall will be covered with other things. Builder Bob will still have a work room……but it isn’t very big and he will share it with the water softener, water tank and furnace. I’m sure glad that stuff won’t be in my room! The glass of wine is mine….the television is Bob’s.

We have light!!!! This is so neat! I don’t face the river but I’m thankful to just have a view. My sewing table will go below the windows.

We had the new furnace installed the first part of November but had to wait on the ductwork.

Time for a new door. This is out in the kitchen area, there is a door to a bathroom and a storage room…..now a door to Builder Bob’s new tiny shop.

The door is in but it still needs to be painted. We decide to go with a white door as there will be a vent in it. I have to wait until all the sawing is done before I can paint. I’m sure glad that small room isn’t mine!

This week the ductwork was finished. They had to run ductwork through the storage room and closet to get out to the kitchen and garage area.

The soffit is almost done on the back wall. There will be one recessed light in it. Wait until you see ALL the light I will have! That table……it will be my new cutting table. It is on wheels which is great but is too tall right now. I want it to be about 36 inches tall.

Today Builder Bob was putting up the final wall. It is almost time to paint!

Have I mentioned how BIG my room will be???? It will be 17 x 32 – approximately 500 square feet. Here is a drawing of the space….without all my sewing machines in it. I just can’t wait!

The plan is to have EVERYTHING that is quilt/craft related in this room. My old studio will become a spare bedroom. I don’t really see it getting done before the end of the year but……January 2016…I hope to get moved in!

  7. We will never see you again once that dream sewing room is done Connie. You deserve it though. Gosh, you do SO much with the smaller room you have now. You will have enough room when it's done that you can hold your own quilting classes and still have plenty of room to spare. 🙂

  20. Congratulations on coming up with the perfect idea for your new studio! I am envious of its size! I told my Woodworker Hubby all about it but he is not ready to give up his room….so for now, I have a sewing room in the basement, one in the spare room, and extra stuff in the other spare room! I totally get why you wanted a larger space. Yay you and yay Builder Bob for making your dreams come true!

  21. Sew exciting! What a long project this has been, but I am seeing an end in sight. Good luck with the finishing and moving in.

  22. so happy for you every quilter should have her own room where she can leave everything out and come back to it any time, I love my room enjoy your studio

  23. Dora, the Quilter says:

Congratulations! It will be a lovely space, and lovely to have everything in one room. Yours is about the size of the last apartment I lived in–20 years ago.

  24. What a wonderful new space. I have my basement, but I share it with the computer desk as well as a large sectional and entertainment center. I also share it with cave crickets (really large bugs that petrify me). Enjoy!

  25. Doris Rice, The Quilting Queen says:

What a lucky girl you are! The new space is going to be heavenly!

  26. Happy Cottage Quilter says:

  28. How exciting! Congratulations!

  29. grammajudyb says:

I am excited for you. I am out of room in my allotted space. I am trying to downsize by using up my scraps and finishing project that were purchased and then never started and finished. It is helping, but it will take me a few years I think.

  30. Wow. What an exciting post. We can never have enough space for our quilting studios. Good for you. I hope you love it.

  31. How exciting for you!

  32. Congratulations! What a wonderful space! I enjoyed all of your construction pictures. Can't wait to see the finish!

  33. Createology says:

Looks like all good things come to those who wait. Your new studio will be such a JOY for you and your Creative Muse! Blessings Dear…

  34. Myra @ Busy Hands Quilts says:

You are one lucky gal! You might need a speaker system if Builder Bob is sitting in his easy chair watching you sew at the other end!

  35. Sally Hurley says:

    That is seriously exciting!

  36. That's SO exciting! I know how much I'd appreciate moving from such a small space (mine is 1' width x length less than your current room) and I can only dream of having a larger space. The fun you're going to have creating in a spacious room!

  37. That is a major project and will be great when finished. I am lucky to have all of my quilting/sewing stuff in one room too and it's pretty big with plenty of room to work. But it's in the basement and the windows are high with no view. Some days I desperately want a real window, but then I remind myself it beats sewing in my dining room which is where things started years ago.

Enjoy that new space planned just for you. I'm looking forward to watching it take shape.

  38. What wonderful news! I'm so excited for you I've been dreaming of having a studio! One day, I dreamt I'd live on the ocean, and now I do, so maybe, someday……..? It's almost finished! Have lots of fun setting it up! XO

  39. Carole @ From My Carolina Home says:

You are going to love it, and it is worth the wait! I took almost a year renovating my basement, tearing out closets and outer sliding glass doors, pulling up 40-year-old carpet, then installing new casement windows, new flooring, painting (three times since I couldn't get the color right), then arranging all my stuff. It is just wonderful to have all the machines at the ready all the time, with a cutting table set up all the time and the ironing board too! All within a few steps of each other. Have fun, and do share more pics when it is done.!

  40. Vicki in MN says:

It's gonna be 'sew' awesome!! I can just imagine how anxious you are 🙂

  41. Lucky you! Can't wait to see what goodies come out of there! Those walls will make great design walls, too.

  42. Nancy @ Wrapped In Love says:

How exciting!!!! I can't wait to see your "all finished and moved in" photos!

Nancy (up the river from you)

  43. Sylvia Anderson says:

Connie, I am 'sew' happy for you, and am looking forward to seeing pictures of your new room (with a view), as you make it your own. How exciting. Bet that brain of yours is filled with all sorts of bright ideas for your new space and I can't wait to see it take shape.

  45. Libby in TN says:

Wow, Lucky Girl! Looks like it will be very spacious. Do I understand correctly that this area is out of flood threat? We'll expect twice the production from you once you're settle in! LOL

  46. Podunk Pretties says:

A dream studio! You lucky gal!

  47. squeal. this is sew exciting! congrats. can't wait to see the final reveal.

  48. Congratulations on getting a dream studio. It is so important to have it all in one place. Mine in on 2 levels so lots of exercise……and sometimes frustration.
