DIY Painted Fabric Art Mini Quilt

I had fun creating a DIY Painted Fabric Art Mini Quilt wall hanging after I doodled a small floral design on some muslin that I had sprayed with fabric paint. The mini quilt is only 10 inches square.

These are the same Tulip Fabric paints I have used in the past with my granddaughters and…..the girls were here over the weekend and we worked on some fun projects that I’ll be sharing soon.

I also used some Dylusions Ink Spray, a Faber Castell Pitt artist pen, and a pastel batik for the border of my mini quilt.

I put the muslin in a hoop before I sprayed it with the fabric paints. I could have just put a piece of freezer paper behind it too.

Once I liked the way the colors were blended on the muslin I removed it from the hoop and heat set it. Put a piece of typing paper over the fabric to protect your iron. The little flower in the background was done with alcohol inks…..I still have to finish it.

Once the fabric was dry I put it back in the hoop so the fabric would be taut and used a permanent ink pen to draw a little flower design. This was the first time I used a Faber Castell Pitt artist pen and I really liked it. I have always used Micron pens before.I actually drew the flower design freehand after I followed this fantastic design motif tutorial by Lindsey Bugbee of The Postman’s Knock. You’ll want to check out her blog as she has lots of wonderful tutorials!

Ink Flower with a Pitt Pen

I trimmed my painted fabric art and found a batik in my Island Batik ambassador stash that seemed a perfect match.  It has been a while since I free motioned a feather design so I drew a wavy line and then the feathers with a Frixon pen. I definitely like having something to guide me and I have never had trouble removing the lines with an iron.

I used two layers of batting, one was Warm & Natural and the other batting was Hobbs 80/20.

I used Aurifil Thread 5021 for my quilting.I decided not to quilt the center of the mini quilt.

I also cut two 3 1/2-inch squares of fabric and folded them diagonally and then added them to the back of the mini-quilt before attaching the binding. This wall hanging is so small and I can use a shish kebab skewer to hang it.

I plan on doing some more floral designs on fabric and on paper.I thought it would be fun to share a photo that shows just how small the painted fabric art mini quilt is!

So pretty! I want to try this! I have a kids sewing guild and I think this would be a really fun project for them!! I think I’d make a challenge with it, have them do the painting, then take that home and making a project with the finished art!!

  2. Really beautiful, Connie. Thanks for the info on how you made it. I’d be very interested in seeing how you did the spray painting. Do you dilute the paints first?

  3. I have a friend who does similar work. I am amazed. I have no such skills! Lovely little piece.

  4. Connie–your mini quilt is lovely! Thank you for giving us information on the supplies you used. I’ve already been to Amazon and had a look around. Earlier this summer, my granddaughter and I made mini quilts using fabric inks and dyes and quilting them. I was really pleased with how they came out. I still don’t have all of her projects bound! She is very artistic and had embraced quilting, then we discovered painting on fabrics, and she is hooked on it. I really enjoyed your process and tutorial!

  5. That looks really nice, Connie. The ink design in the center is great. I like the way you framed it too. It looks like a fun project.
