Flannel scraps from PJs turned into a quilt

I have been working on a quilt for Spring Market of 2017  with……lots and lots of small half square triangles. Sometimes I needed a little break so I pulled out this pile of flannel remnants leftover from PJs that my neighbor had made. Scraps from PJs turned into a quilt

I got thinking about all the quilts I have ever made and…..I don’t think I have every made a all flannel quilt! I have used flannel on the back of baby quilts but the tops were cotton. I think it just might be time for me to make a flannel quilt.Flannel scraps turned into blocksI decided to cut just two different size blocks which were 5 inch squares and 2 3/4 inch squares. First I cut as many 5 inch squares as I can and then the leftovers are cut 2 3/4 inch. I can then sew 4 of the 2 3/4 inch squares together and they will make a 5 inch square.Cutting flannel squares

This is a project that could easily be put in a box and forgotten about so I decided to put the blocks in a drawer right next to my sewing machine. Now when I am working on a quilt or project I can use these blocks as leaders and enders and eventually get them made into a quilt. This works well for me because I always, always like to work on two or three projects at a time…..do you?Leaders and enders in flannelI am amazed at all the Black Friday deals that have already started! I ordered a new TV for Builder Bob on Thursday from Best Buy and got in on Friday! No charge for shipping either! I also bought myself a new 21 inch Lenovo computer monitor so I can have dual screens. It also came from Best Buy with no shipping charge but….I didn’t get it until Saturday which was okay because I have the box sitting here on the floor next to my computer but…..I am not “allowing” myself to work play with it until I finish a few things.

Builder/chef Bob is putting a commercial grill/stove in the basement….he is already thinking about breakfast parties this winter with bacon on the grill but there is a problem with it. It doesn’t look like it has ever been cleaned and Builder Bob worked outside for two days cleaning it and just was ready to give up when he thought about a steam cleaner. None of the rental places around here have one but he found one on Amazon…..I think Amazon has everything! Anyway he read the reviews and it can be used a many different things so….a McCulloch Heavy Duty Steam Cleaner should be getting here on Monday.  I hope it works!

  1. Connie,
Thank you for this post. What a great use of flannel scraps. It has inspired me! I have been given a lot of flannel. Some pieces are big enough to make receiving blankets but there are a lot of good sized scraps too. I want to use the scraps to make quilts like you have. I am curious though, at what point do you put the batting on the quilt? When each block is finished, or when the whole quilt top is put together?

  2. The flannel PJ quilt is a great idea. I’ve been holding onto my kids’ receiving blankets waiting for inspiration on what to do with them (I can’t bring myself to get rid of them) so this idea has got me thinking of possibilities.

  3. The flannel will make such a soft snuggly quilt for winter time! And I love the pretty colors and designs. I would love to try to make a throw with flannel squares! Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. I like your method for the flannel quilt. Wish I had your fun flannel stash!!

  5. Great idea! A flannel quilt and a leader ender project in one! It will be so soft and snuggly!

I’m kinda liking the idea of a steam cleaner. You never know when it can come in handy.

I totally understand that you need a change from the half square triangles. I get that way when it starts to get tedious with something I am working on.

I know it’s off in the future, but I can’t wait to see the flannel quilt. It also made me think about making one. I’ve never made a flannel quilt.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. You have a lot to be thankful for as do my husband and I!

Make sure you clean out your bobbin case often while working with flannel. It really creates a lot of lint. The colors of your flannel scraps look great. Much different than your usual batik color schemes.

  8. Love your flame quilt! I’ve never made one, and I’m cold blooded. Something I really need to consider. That stone sounds awesome!

  9. I have quite a lot of flannel. You made me think! I love the softness of it.

  10. I can’t believe all of the places who are already having their Black Friday sales. Amazing and fun!

The flannel leader enders will be perfect. Flannel quilts are so cozy.

  11. What a warm and snuggly quilt it will be! Leader and ended projects are a great way to get “extra” quilts made.

  12. Connie I think a flannel quilt would be such a cozy hug and would make perfect Linus blankets. Wow…you really are getting the deals. Happy leader and ending flannel blocks. Happy Thanksgiving.
