Happy Valentine’s Day! How would you like to make a cute little fabric basket? I’ve got an easy fabric basket tutorial for you!

Valentine fabric basket with teddy bear in it

Are you going out to dinner or doing something fun? I’m sure the restaurants will be packed so we may wait a day or two. Since Builder Bob is also “Chef Bob” I won’t be cooking! Yesterday was Galentine’s Day and I shared a tutorial for a Skinny Strip Mug Rug if you missed it.

Isn’t that the cutest little cup! I like to go to Dollar Tree and pick up things like that for the holidays, how can you beat the price! I even got the little teddy bear from there and have bought them before to put in my little sleeping bags for gifts!

It was so much fun to work with my new batiks from Island Batik and create a couple of new fabric baskets.

Have you ever made any? I have a super easy tutorial with plenty of pictures. It helps to use a denim needle when sewing the corners…..lots of thickness so just go slow.

You’ll want to start with this fabric basket tutorial first as I have lots of photos showing each step.

Then you may want to check out my post where I give a bit more information on how I do the sides of the baskets and show the basket two different ways.

I continue to experiment and try different sizes all the time…..I bet I will share baskets for St. Patricks Day also!

Each batik basket was made just a little bit differently.

Read the directions in my tutorial and then choose one of the sizes below for your basket.

Sizes of my Valentine’s Day fabric baskets.

  • 16″ fabric squares with 2 ½” corners
  • 14½” fabric squares with 2 ½” corners
  • 14″ fabric squares with 2″ corners

I even have one more mug rug I shared yesterday! Would you believe I made the crazy heart block a couple of years ago and only turned it into a mug rug…….this past week!

Creating the baskets

Pick two different fabrics, one will be the outside of the basket and the other will be the inside fabric for the basket.

Depending on the size of the basket you want to make, you’ll either cut fabric 14 inches or 16 inches square.

You can use any kind of batting for the baskets, this is a great way to use up scraps. I just straighten the edges and then zig-zag them together. If you would like a basket with more body then you should use Soft and Stable.

Batiks for fabric baskets

Place both fabrics on top of the batting. If you are using fabrics other than batiks that have a right and wrong side, place both right sides together with one of the wrong sides facing the batting.

Sew the fabrics and batting together for the basket

Sew with a 1/4th inch seam allowance and leave an opening for turning. Leave an opening about 4 inches wide. Notice the way I backstitch the opening so it doesn’t come apart.

Leave an opening to turn the fabric

Turn the piece right side out and then sew the opening shut.

Quilt the basket fabric as desired. I had fun doing little free motion wiggles and loops and topstitched around the edges.

To make the corners, click over to my original fabric baskets tutorial to see how to sew the corners. I guess I forgot to take pictures when I made these baskets.
