Evergreen Placemats Freebie

I thought you might enjoy reading about our Evergreen placemats…..since there is usually only three of us for dinner….my dad, Bob and me….3 will work out just fine.

When I was going through the container with Christmas fabric in it I found this neat red plaid that I have had for quite some time and then I saw the green with gold holly leaves……since I was working on my Evergreen Tree Table Runner tutorial I decided to make the tree a little taller and skinnier for a placemat.

First I cut out my evergreen trees with a fusible on the back. I cut my fabric 13 inches by 17 inches and appliqued the tree with free-motion stippling. I then put the 2 layers and a layer of batting cut 12 x 16 together and just did some straight stitching to hold the pieces together and also stitched around the outside about 1/2 inch from the edge.

My plan was to make rag place-mats…..honestly…..I’m not crazy about all that cutting!

Here is a closeup of the cutting…..I made one this way and then decided binding worked better for me! This one will be the center mat that we will sit dishes on. I know it will look neater once it is washed and I did order a 5-inch die from Accuquilt that will do rag blocks without me having to do all the cutting.

When I decided to add the binding I trimmed my placemats to 12 x 16 and did a little stippling on them. I decided to add a wiggle line done the center of the tree to keep it flat after washing. I did the applique on just the front side before adding the back.

I've made rag quilts and I hate the cutting part. I'll put in a good movie while I do the cutting. Your mats turned out really nice!

I've been needing placemats for years. Maybe I'll sit down and do this. So pretty and simple. I love red check too. Never get tired of it. Thank you. Merry Christmas.

  7. Very cute placemats. I'm with you on the rag edges. I made one rag quilt as a prize for my breed rescue fundraiser. Never again!! I loved the way it turned out but the cutting was not fun. To make it even worse, the scissors I bought expressly for that purpose turned out to have a little rough edge in one spot so they kept snagging when I made the cuts. Yikes!! We are being threatened with freezing rain here today so I'll be in … working on Catvent!
